On Sunday, Fox News will premiere “The Half Hour News Hour,” the network’s first news satire program. Promo clips from the show don’t look too promising, and responses have been overwhelmingly negative.
This commercial seems to be marketing the show as a conservative alternative to The Daily Show, but defensive entertainment isn’t usually very successful. (see: Air America, radio) Unless they are hiding innovative bits until the premiere (which seems counterintuitive), the show looks pretty ill fated.
I’m much more excited about Greg Gutfeld’s show “Red Eye,” which premiered on the network February 1. The production values are reminiscent 1990s VH1, but there are some great moments, the best of them so far being their ombudsman segment. Andrew Levy, who appears twice to critique the show’s progress and generally make fun of the contributors, is almost always funny and has excellent comedic timing.
The sound is screwed up on the only clip I could find to post here. It makes Levy sound like a news chipmunk and leaves Mickey Kaus looking even more confused about his presence on the show.
If I can find a better clip I will post it, but here’s a sample of his contribution from The Daily Gut:
Greg: It’s time for our ombudsman, Andrew Levy. Andrew, tell us what we did right and what we did wrong.
Andrew: Hey, Greg. She hated pills.
Greg: She what?
Andrew: That was in response to your question, “What can you say about Anna Nicole Smith that nobody else is saying?”
- “Dan, you said that in her last days, Anna Nicole had been acting ‘crazy’ and ‘different.’ Which one was it?”
- “If you think I’m gonna make fun of Pat Dollard, you’re out your damn mind.”
- “Tomorrow, Michael Medved will join us for a discussion about how Hollywood is dealing with the sudden death of Anna Nicole Smith; we’ll have a look at how the untimely death of Anna Nicole Smith sent shockwaves through the Chicago Mercantile Exchange; I’m going to talk to Islam expert Daniel Pipes about how the Muslim world is coping with the lamentable death of Anna Nicole Smith; Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia will break down the legal issues surrounding the tragic death of Anna Nicole Smith; and finally, we’re going to talk to Republican strategist Mary Matalin about how the unexpected death of Anna Nicole Smith may affect the President’s troop surge… Also, the Grammys are on Sunday! Oooh. That’s all I got on the Grammys: Oooh.”
