Portugal’s biggest newspaper Publico has an interview with yours truly about vice presidents, the election, and my latest book. (If you haven’t bought a copy yet, what’s keeping you?) For those JeremyLott.net readers who grok Portuguese, it’s a must-read.

In addition to Mr. Higgins’s fine list of horror films, let me suggest a Halloween comedy that’s kid safe: Spaced Invaders. It’s the story of a group of screwup aliens, part of Mars’s asteroid patrol fleet, who are tricked by a broadcast of Orson Wells’s War of the Worlds into invading the small town of Big Bean, Illinois. Looks like director Patrick Read Johnson also brought out another small movie this year called 77. Will be sure to check that out and report back.

In honor of Halloween, allow me to suggest a baker’s dozen of semi-obscure horror films for you to rent:
- Haxan: Witchcraft Throughout The Ages (1922) — This early Danish silent film is supposedly a documentary about necromancy. Or is it a how-to manual? Either way the recreations of medieval witchcraft practices and Satanic rituals are so elaborate and, ahem, enthusiastic you’ll wonder what exactly director Benjamin Christensen (who also plays the Devil, BTW) was up to. Be prepared to see some things you’d never thought you’d glimpse in an old-time movie. (more…)

Just put my absentee ballot in the mail and it should shortly be winging its way to Lynden, Washington. The presidential pick was easy but I had a tougher time on the VP choice, so I wrote in my bartender Melissa Morris. Maybe I’ll get a free beer out of that.

Chris Buckley has an early draft of John McCain’s concession speech. Here’s a snippet:
My friends, now is not the time for recrimination. There will be time for that. Like tomorrow morning. For now, let me just say, I thank you for your tremendous effort and hard work. I could not have done this without you all. I’m just sorry that so many of you will now not get patronage jobs in the federal government.

In TV Week this week, I contrast the spectacularly boring presidential debates with the exciting vice presidential one and call for more VP bloodletting. How bad were the presidential debates? This bad:
During their final presidential debate, Sen. McCain complained bitterly that Sen. Obama turned down his offer to curtail campaign advertising and substitute 10 town hall-style meetings. Any sane person could only reply: God bless you, Sen. Obama, for saving us from that.
Like most presidential debates, this year’s yak contests were flat and predictable—the product of our new, seemingly endless political season. The Republican tried to sound like a maverick Democrat and the Democrat did his best to play the boring moderate Republican.
Blows were exchanged, but not really. It was the adult equivalent of two 9-year-olds pummeling each other with Nerf bats. [more...]

In the Guardian today, I have a write up of Meghan McCain’s new children’s book My Dad, John McCain. Seeing as how I endorsed my own dad for president, I tried to go easy on her.
